is this parilla the next Don Julio?

Asado festival, Britney Spears & Malbec, and more...

¡Bienvenidos!

I'm in the process of creating the full guide for expats in Argentina (and people looking to move here).

I'm currently talking to lawyers, realtors, and other professionals.

But I could use your help 🙂

In order for this to be the best guide possible, I'd like to get some first-hand experiences from long-term expats.

So if you:

  • Got a legal residency

  • Became an Argentinian citizen (got a passport)

  • Bought property here

  • Or just if you have a trusted contact who speaks English (doctors, maids, lawyers, realtors, chefs, anything really)...

I want to hear from you.

So check out the survey - if there's anything you can help with, fill out the survey and I'll contact you within 24 hours.

Not only do I really appreciate it - but all the other expats who will benefit from your experience will appreciate it as well 🙂

Thanks!

📰 News

  • General transport strike on May 6th: Just a heads up - there will be a general transportation strike next Monday. It’ll happen from 8 am to 11 am and include subways, but apparently not buses.

  • Britney Spears makes Malbec go viral: “…first time with real wine…” she claims in her Instagram post. You also have to love the response from Norton wines (in the picture): they are selling the bottle with a 25% discount code: BRITNEY. *Slow clap* Well done Norton, well done.

  • $10,000 peso note coming soon (Spanish): the government expects the note to be available to the wider public starting in June (fingers crossed since they already said it would be here in May).

🎤 Expat Interview

Welcome to our expat spotlight section.

This is where we interview both new and long-term expats in Buenos Aires and ask them to share their tips and recommendations.

Here’s the today’s interview:

What’s your name, country of origin, and how long have you been in Buenos Aires?

I was born in California but was only 5 years old when my parents returned to Sweden. My name is Alice Keiller, I am Swedish and I have been in Argentina since 1969.

What brought you to Buenos Aires, and how was the initial adjustment process?

I had anorexia, possibly caused by the cold weather and I flourished in Buenos Aires. No adjustment process, I loved everything, learned Spanish quickly, and had a great time. At first, I was a bit shocked by all the kissing and the ¨piropos¨ but then I enjoyed the kissing and LOVED the piropos.

What's been the most challenging aspect of living in Buenos Aires?

Punctuality; and phone services when I first arrived.

And what has been the most rewarding aspect of living here?

I love this country, it is gorgeous and very large but one has to make 10-14 stops everywhere for several years and eventually one gets to see mindblowing places and people.

I love the people, so outgoing, funny, absolutely mindblowing humor, and such good friends.

Oh, and the food. That is really important. The food is generous and you have such an enormous quantity of restaurants to choose from. It is always a joy.

As you can see the anorexia disappeared, ja, ja.......

What's your favorite local restaurant, bar, or cafe, and why?

We like La Candelaria in Martinez.

The food is very good and the menu includes foods that we ate in the 80s and 90s.

We love 1888 which is in a place about 30 km from Buenos Aires. It’s Manzanares and you have to book your table.

Their artichoke tart is heavenly, their tuna fish canes vacuum-boiled seconds and dipped in seeds are incredible, the potato tortilla is the best I have ever had and I can go on, and on.

In Buenos Aires, I would probably choose Cabaña Las Lilas in Puerto Madero. Everything is delicious.

What hidden gem in Buenos Aires deserves more recognition?

The CCK is truly something wonderful.

Torcuato Tasso, tango for mostly Argentinians. No acrobatic dancing, normal to very good dancing, and the public participates. The food is just asado with salads.

What advice would you give to new expats in Buenos Aires?

Watch your purse, your phone, and your credit cards, and make sure you have photo copies of everything.

Don’t walk late at night in neighborhoods you don’t know or feel safe, make sure you have medical insurance and contact your countri’s club, consulate, etc., to see if they have something more to tell you.

Thanks Alice for agreeing to this interview!

💡 Did You Know?

Did you know that Fileteado is a unique art form from Buenos Aires, characterized by its intricate, curvy lines and vivid colors?

Fileteado began in the gray carts pulled by horses, transporting fruits, milk, groceries, and bread at the end of the 19th century.

Today, it can be found in signs, murals, and even tattoos, reflecting the city's vibrant culture and history.

Well…

I might as well ask 😅

I’m running out of interviews to include in the expat interview section.

So if you like that section and would like it to continue, could you do me a solid and fill out the expat survey?

It’ll take you less than 2 minutes - and you will be helping new expats find their footing.

Here’s the survey - thanks in advance!
